THE LAST BUFFALO
About the Film
The Last Buffalo is a made-for-television natural history docu-drama about the past and future of the American bison. Colorful historical re-enactments, and breathtaking musical interludes, lend to the film's strong sense of action and adventure.
The film was commissioned by the Smithsonian Institution, in 2014, with Warehouse-51 Productions, of Bristol, UK, for broadcast on the Smithsonian Channel Television Network. The film was shot in super-high-definition, and adapted for Cable TV and Internet. It runs about 53-minutes.
The Last Buffalo tells the story of early work with bison, dating to the 1880s, under Smithsonian Chief Taxidermist William Temple Hornaday -- until recently a little-known figure who, along with Theodore Roosevelt, became an important founder of the American Conservation movement in early decades of the twentieth century. How this early work set the stage for the current vision of restoring bison to extensive grasslands on Tribal reservations across the American west, is a theme in the film's latter parts.
In addition to its natural history content, the film addresses the recovery of Hornaday's well-known American Bison Group -- the nation's historic monument to the wild bison, or "buffalo" -- which stood prominently in the National Museum of Natural History, in Washington, D.C., until the mid-1950s.
The film's award-winning Producer/Director, Steve Nicholls, holds a 30-year resume with BBC Natural History Unit, producing films for Nature, NOVA, National Geographic, and other high-profile entities.
The Last Buffalo was completed in late-2015, and premiered on The Smithsonian Channel, December 28, 2016, with continuous screening on the channel. Following initial cable and Internet distribution, the film was distributed to visitor centers, museum cinemas, and other history and natural history venues. There is a 4K version for I-Max theaters.
Filmed account of Hornaday's work with the American Bison Group has never before been presented to the public in documentary form.
